Silicon Chip November 2008

This month features a wealth of interesting articles and projects. We have a look at the new AirNav Radar Box, this intersting little unit enables you to know the position of each aircraft in your vicinity. The unit listens in to the signal for the commercial aircraft and combined with the software installed on your computer, can give a visual indication of the location of each aircraft. Great for the aircraft buffs, or letting you check when an aircraft will arrive carrying a friend. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the integrated circuit, we have a look at the interesting history behind the development and also some of the early applications. Also this month a quick tutorial on Oxygen Sensors, how they work and how they are applied in car engines to achieve maximum performance and high efficiency.

This month’s projects include a 12V Speed Controller or Lamp Dimmer. This compact little project, will allow you to control the speed of a 12V motor up to 5A or for a 12V lamp, as used in low voltage systems of up to 50W. The project can be built quickly and easily, on a low budget. Also this month build an attractive Wideband Air-Fuel Mixture Display, this unit incorporates a 3-digit LED display as well as a LED bargraph, to give an easy to read display. The unit can be used with petrol or LPG cars and will help in insuring your motor is running optimally. The second part of the USB Clock is also included together with a IrDA Interface Board for the new DSP Musicolour diplay unit.

All projects come complete with circuit diagram and electronic parts list.
